Emery, being a middle child in a very large family, suffered from 'middle child' syndrome.  He felt that he did not receive enough attention compared to younger members of the family.  It is true that Ludwig directed a fair amount of attention toward Margaret and Mary.  Emery may have been jealous of this.

Emery left New York at his first opportunity by joining the Navy.  Upon discharge from the Navy, he decided to change his name.  He chose Kelley.

Emery never again saw his NY family after leaving NY.   He seemed to leave his childhood ties behind.  Ludwig and Rosa often wondered if he would ever visit.  He never did.

In a letter, his brother Edwin made a few remarks about Emery and his absence from the family.  We have that letter....

Emery, some years after marrying Dorothea Nagel, took her sister Ruth as a life partner.  He essentially had two families.  For his second family he used the name Kelly.   So, when we look at Emery's family, we must consider three names;  Kautz, Kelley and Kelly.  All of the Kelley's and Kelly's are Kautz's by blood relation.
